Project Description:  Bike to School Education Pilot Project

Between April 18, 2017 and September 29, 2017, Island Work Transitions Inc. will provide up to 26 weeks of work experience and skill enhancement opportunities in the areas of project research and reporting, development of educational and marketing materials, event planning, and public speaking, to 2 eligible participants in order to enhance their skills and secure ongoing employment.

By the end of the project duration the participants, under the direction of the Project Coordinator, will have created a pilot project to develop in-class cycling opportunities that will promote cycling as a means of transportation, recreation and physical activity for elementary school students.

PARTICIPANT ACTIVITIES

  • Collaboration – Participants will gain experience in working on a project as a team, as well as working with partnering community organizations.
  • Research – Investigate cycling education initiatives and training materials in other communities, with a focus on educational initiatives to increase cycling awareness. The participants will also gain an understanding of the Provincial school curriculum, and research means of incorporating cycling activities into the existing curriculum.
  • Report Writing – Keep records and document activities, including project milestones and a final report on the successes and issues that occurred during the project.
  • Marketing – Develop information and marketing materials, including internet and social media, and undertake a marketing campaign for community events.
  • Develop Educational Materials- Participants will use the research they have gathered to develop a bike education curriculum as a pilot project for integrating cycling activities into schools.
  • Public Speaking – Participants will gain experience in public speaking at school and community events.
  • Event Planning – Participate in planning a cycling event for a local school, attend various community events (like the summer “Our Town” events) to promote cycling, and host a final end-of-program event to report the findings of the project to the community.
  • Networking – A considerable amount of time will be spent out in the community, talking to various community agencies and groups, and establish a network of community contacts.

Participants will:

  • Complete an orientation that includes an overview of the project activities and objectives, as well as an introduction to project community partners
  • Receive WorkSafe BC Occupational First Aid Level 1 training
  • Receive cycling safety training from a certified bike training instructor
Qualifications 

Participant candidates should:

  • Have basic knowledge of office procedures, and some MS Office computer skills, including Word and Excel – some knowledge of Outlook and Publisher would be beneficial
  • Have good communication and interpersonal skills, and be willing to engage in public speaking and working with children
  • Be energetic and creative, and engage willingly with team members and community partners
  • Having an interest or some experience in cycling activities and bike safety knowledge would be an asset

 

IMPORTANT NOTES FOR APPLICANTS

This is a Job Creation Partnership Project, not regular paid employment.  Hours worked during the Job Creation Partnership are not insurable for future EI benefits.

In order to qualify as an applicant, you MUST:

  • Be on a current Regular EI claim, or had an EI claim which ended in the last 60 months (5 years)
  • Be unemployed (working less than 20 hours per week) and demonstrate a need for current work experience to support your return to sustainable employment
  • Before participation in the Job Creation Partnership can begin, participants must submit to a Criminal Record Check, Vulnerable Sector Search
