The Bereavement Services Counsellor works closely with the Hospice Services Coordinator and is responsible for the grief and bereavement programs.

Responsibilities Include (but are no limited to) :

  1. Assess and evaluate existing bereavement programs and education.
  2. Assist in the development of new education and support programs.
  3. Act as a liaison with other community agencies and support services.
  4. Provide ongoing bereavement counselling to families of hospice community clients, community referraks and Ty Watson House residents.
  5. Work with and assist the Hospice Services Coordinator to debrief and provide psychosocial support to volunteers and staff, residents and family contacts.
  6. Provide psychosocial assessment, support, information and education to meet the needs of residents and families.
  7. Maintain records and statistical data of all bereavement clients and programs.
  8. Assist the Hospice Services Coordinator when required with hospice volunteer training and education.
  9. Send designated mail outs during the first year of bereavement.
  10. Maintain confidentiality as outlined in the AVHS Policy Manual.
  11. Flexibility as a hospice team member to provide support and creativity in helping to meet the needs of clients, residents and families.
  12. Provide monthly written reports as required (eg. the Board and Annual General Meeting).
  13. Maintain an active commitment to professional development.
Qualifications 
  1. Experience and training in bereavement support, with a knowledge of both theory and practice of grief and bereavement counselling.
  2. Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Family Therapy, Social Work or equivalent education, and experience.
  3. Is a Registered Clinical Counsellor.
  4. Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with the hospice team and other professionals.
  5. Ability to work effectively with individuals, families, children on a one-to-one and group basis.
  6. Flexible and caring attitude when dealing with people.
  7. Demonstrate initiative, flexibility and self-direction.
  8. Good record keeping and computer skills and organizational skills.
  9. Maintain confidentiality as outlined in the Alberni Valley Hospice Society policy manual.
