The Port Alberni Friendship Center is seeking an Urban Aboriginal Childhood Development Outreach Liaison Worker – full time permanent.  Under the direction of the Family and Health Services Team Leader, this person will be responsible for providing quality caring and supportive services for parents or expectant parents and care givers with babies or young children in their own homes with the objective of enhancing parenting skills, reducing isolation and encouraging individuals to establish linkages with informal support networks and community resources.

Administrative:

  • Ensure health and safety policies and procedures are maintained.
  • Has knowledge and awareness of emergency procedures.
  • Ensures monthly reports including statistical data are provided to the Supervisor and Executive Director.
  • Attends relevant training sessions / workshops. (Professional development).
  • Ensures all mileage and expense records are accurate, up to date, and submitted in a timely manner.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Ability to establish and maintain nurturing, positive relationships with children, staff and families.
  • Ability to work respectfully and collaboratively with a team.
  • This position requires sound judgment, strong written and oral communication skills, and the ability to maintain confidentiality while conveying information.
  • The incumbent is supportive, seeks new concepts and makes suggestions for improvement, exhibits strong interpersonal skills, and is able to display tact, respect and diplomacy. The Early Childhood Development worker will have strong time management skills, be reliable have a thorough knowledge and understanding of the provincial acts as they relate to children and families, community resources available and ability to understand and comply with internal Policies and Procedures.
  • Excellent facilitation skills and experience.
  • The ECD Worker is a socially sensitive person, who provides a safe, secure and respectful environment for employees, children and families. Represents the Port Alberni Friendship Center and embraces the vision to improve family relationships for aboriginal people while encouraging and reinforcing traditional practices and cultural beliefs. 
Qualifications 

Education and Experience:

The successful candidate will possess a combination of education and experience that satisfy all or most of the following:

  • ECE Diploma,  Early Childhood Development, Child & Youth Care, Social Work or equivalent and/or combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Familiarity with the multiple challenges faced by many urban Aboriginal children and families.
  • Direct social work/formal counselling experience.

MANDATORY:

  • Must possess a valid Class 5 Driver’s License and have a reliable vehicle that can be used for work.
  • Must provide Criminal Record Check and Drivers Abstract upon selection,
  • Must have valid Level I First Aid and CPR
  • Must be available to travel and be flexible in hours,
