The Port Alberni Friendship Center is seeking one Urban Aboriginal Childhood Development Outreach Liaison Worker for full time (35 hours/week).  Under the direction of the Family & Health Services Team Leader, this person will be responsible for supporting parents or expectant parents and care givers with babies or young children in their own homes with the objective of enhancing parenting skills, reducing isolation and encouraging individuals to establish linkages with informal support networks and community resources.

Qualifications 

Qualifications:

 

  • Early Childhood Education, Public Health, BSW or related degree and/or related experience.
  • Knowledge and understanding of First Nations’ Culture, Spirituality, and various Social histories and a demonstrated ability to work with First Nations people.
  • Knowledge of Urban Aboriginal Health issues.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Able to prepare written reports.
  • Able to design, organize and facilitate workshops and events.
  • Able to work to empower others to work together.
  • Highly motivated, flexible, and personable.
  • Ability to make and maintain effective contacts with agencies, organizations, and other groups in the community, and know what resources are available to clients.
  • Able to work in a team setting.
  • Able to take initiative and work independently.
  • Willing to participate in staff development.
  • Willing to travel on occasion.
  • Willing to work flexible hours and days.
  • Must possess a valid class five driver’s license and have reliable transportation which can be used for work.
  • Must provide a drivers abstract and submit to a criminal record check.
