Position: Research Assistant; Part Time Contract Position

Location: Port Alberni & Anacla, BC; possibly other locations in BC

Authority Relationship: HFN Support Person and Research Coordinator

Position Summary:

The Research Assistant will interview, transcribe (type word for word), and recruit Huu-ay-aht citizens for interview purposes according to research ethical protocols as part of the ‘Our Journey, Our Choice, Our Future: Applying a Community-Based Participatory Research Approach to Document, Understand, and Evaluate the Huu-ay-aht Path to a Modern Treaty and Its Implementation with British Columbia and Canada’ research project.

This research project is being conducted in partnership with Huu-ay-aht First Nations and Dr. Heather Castleden from Queen’s University. Guidance and support will be provided to the Research Assistant at all stages of this position. Training will also be provided, however eagerness to learn about research and Huu-ay-aht’s path to treaty is a core requirement.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Work with the University-based Research Coordinator (non-Huu-ay-aht) to recruit, interview, and transcribe interviews with Huu-ay-aht citizens
  • Ensure ethical protocols are maintained at all stages of the research, including confidentiality
  • Familiarity with the research project (for a brief description see: http://www.heclab.com/our-journey-our-choice-our-future/ )
  • Prepare for interviews (time and place) and ensure audio-recording equipment is ready
Qualifications 

Operational Requirements:

  • Demonstrates effective and respectful communication skills
  • Ability to listen and process information on the spot
  • Flexibility and ability to work in a variety of environments
  • Some domestic travel, including overnight and/or weekends, may be required (mileage, meals, and accommodation will be covered)
  • Skills to balance contract hours to ensure that all interviews are conducted properly and comprehensively
  • Knowledge of Word and Audio Software
  • Skills with typing and editing documents
  • Driver’s license and vehicle an asset, but not necessary
  • All out-of-pocket expenses will be reimbursed.

Education Requirements: 


  • High School Graduate Preferred
  • Preference may be given to someone who is considering university
