Project Description: Tofino Fire Hall Restoration Job Creation Partnership Project

With the assistance of the participants, between December 8, 2014 and June 5, 2015, Community Fisheries Development Centre will provide up to 26 weeks of work experience and skill enhancement opportunities in the areas of restoration construction to 4 eligible participants in order to enhance their skills and secure ongoing employment. 

Project activities will occur on site @ the Tofino Volunteer Fire Hall located @ 150 2nd Street, Tofino, B.C.

Client Work Experience:

By the end of the project duration, a minimum of four participants will receive work experience and skill enhancement in the area of restoration construction.  These skills will add to the participant’s chances of finding and maintaining long term employment.  

By the end of the project duration, this JCP will have supported the Tofino community with an updated and refurbished Fire Hall that will continue to provide a quality fire/rescue service to their community and its visitors.

Activities:

All participants:

  • Will be recruited and selected in consultation with Alberni Valley Employment Centre (WorkBC)
  • Within one week of their work experience start date, the participants will be provided with a WorkSafe BC safety orientation and training on the use of any project related equipment.
  • Complete an orientation that includes an overview of the Society’s mandate and organizational policies and procedures.
  • Introduction into project activities and tasks; outline goals and objectives.
  • Participants will also complete Emergency First Aid, Transportation Endorsement and WCB certified Power Saw Operators Safety course
  • Introduction to all aspects of framing
  • Setting up frames to support dry walls
  • Installing of dry walls, mudding and sanding
  • Painting interior and exterior
  • Reconfiguration of the Bay Walk through corridor, new door and outside steps
  • Installing and finishing doorways and hanging doors
  • Installing roofing
  • Assisting with electrical outlet changes, light switches and light fixtures
  • Finishing carpentry
  • Minor landscaping if required
Qualifications 

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR APPLICANTS:

* This is a Job Creation Partnership Project, not regular paid employment. In order to qualify as a participant, you MUST:

  • Be EI eligible (be on a current Regular EI claim or have been on a Regular EI claim which ended in the last 36 months, or have a been on a maternity or paternity EI claim which ended in the last 60 months)
  • Be unemployed and demonstrate a need for current work experience to support your return to sustainable employment
